Air Source Heat Pumps are an effective option for heating homes in places with moderate climates such as Glenrothes.

These pumps are typically installed on the side of the building where they draw air from outside and transfer it using compression and two conductive copper tubing-made coils.

When heat is required, the liquid refrigerant in one of the coils takes the heat from the air and vaporizes, passing it into the other coil. This gas then turns into liquid form and produces warmth for the household heating system in air-to-air heat pumps.

The benefits of ASHPs in Glenrothes

Installing an air source heat pump in Glenrothes offer several benefits for homeowners who are looking for an energy-efficient, eco-friendly, and cost-effective way to heat and cool their homes.

Energy efficiency: ASHPs are highly energy-efficient compared to traditional heating and cooling systems. They can produce up to three times more heat than the energy they consume.

Lower energy bills: Since ASHPs are energy-efficient, they can help you save on your energy bills. You can also qualify for incentives or rebates from your utility company or government for using an ASHP.

Lower carbon footprint: ASHPs are a more eco-friendly option for heating and cooling your home because they use renewable energy from the air outside.

Easy installation: ASHPs are easy to install and require minimal ductwork, which can save you time and money during installation.

Versatility: ASHPs can be used for both heating and cooling, which means you don't need separate systems for each.

Improved indoor air quality: ASHPs don't burn fuel like traditional heating systems, which means they don't emit pollutants into the air that can negatively affect indoor air quality.

Low maintenance: ASHPs require minimal maintenance, which means you don't have to spend a lot of time or money maintaining them.

Is my property in Glenrothes suitable for an ASHP?

Before installing an air source heat pump in Glenrothes, it is important to determine if your property is suitable.

Insulation

A well-insulated house is required for efficient operation, and older properties may need insulation upgrades.

Mains gas access

Properties with access to mains gas are ideal for installation, with a greater return on investment seen when switching from oil, LPG or electric heating systems.

Planning permission

Planning permission is not required for installation.

Heat emitters

It is also important to consider the type of heat emitter that will be used. Air source heat pumps work best with low flow temperature emitters, such as underfloor heating. Traditional radiators can still be used, but their size will need to be considered.

An on-site survey will help determine the best location for the unit, assess heating needs, and provide timescales.

ASHP Installation Process

The installation process typically takes 5 working days and does not require groundworks.

The unit is bolted to the ground or brackets connecting it to the property, and then connected to the hot water cylinder. Larger radiator units may be needed to replace existing radiators.

A low maintenance solution

Air source heat pumps require less ongoing maintenance than traditional heating systems and an annual service is recommended to ensure optimum efficiency.

ECO4 Grant funding in Scotland

FREE SOLAR PANELS, HEAT PUMPS, AND INSULATION NOW AVAILABLE UNDER THE ECO4 SCHEME FOR HOMES IN SCOTLAND

The ECO4 scheme in Scotland offers grants to homeowners and private tenants to enhance energy efficiency and reduce heating expenses. Available until March 2026, this government-funded program aims to lower energy bills and decrease carbon emissions.

Through the scheme, energy suppliers must provide grants for energy-saving measures across three categories: heating, insulation, and low-carbon technologies. These measures can include cavity wall insulation, solid wall insulation, solar panels, and heat pumps.

For a household to qualify for the ECO4 grant, it must meet both of the following conditions:

Energy Rating: The property must have a low energy rating, specifically in the E to G range. This means the property's Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) should indicate an energy efficiency rating within this range.

High Energy Costs: The property must have high energy costs. Ofgem typically defines high energy costs for properties that use electric heating or are off the gas grid, relying on alternative heating sources like oil or LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) boilers.

In addition, a member of the household must be in receipt of one of the following means-tested benefits:

  • Working Tax Credits
  • Child Tax Credits
  • Income Support
  • Income-based ESA
  • Income-based JSA
